Why is there so much momentum behind NETCONF?

NETCONF addresses a critical issue for the operators of large networks. Carriers and large enterprises are rolling out networks with many devices from multiple vendors and network devices need more frequent provisioning and upgrading to support data, voice, and video applications.

Configuration management is just getting too complex to depend on old methods. So the push behind NETCONF comes from customers looking for better solutions and vendors positioning themselves to meet the needs of customers. The fact that industry leaders like Cisco and Juniper are already shipping NETCONF compliant products is also driving equipment vendors to add this capability.
