Tail-f Launches ConfD Easing Migration to XML-Based Network Management

February 28, 2007

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – February 28, 2007 – Tail-f Systems today announced the release of ConfD 2.0, extending the capabilities of the company’s XML-based network management software to deliver greater functionality, redundancy, and developer productivity. With this introduction, the ConfD software suite now includes ConfD SNMP Agent and provides an environment where SNMP, NETCONF, CLI, and Web interfaces can use the same configuration database and the same set of instrumentation functions for controlling managed objects.

Using a single XML-based data model, Tail-f’s ConfD allows developers to describe their networking application once and then automatically render CLI, Web, and NETCONF interfaces. The Tail-f SNMP Gateway already allows SNMP event and monitoring data to be translated into an XML format and delivered to other interfaces for presentation to users. The ConfD SNMP Agent further extends the value of Tail-f’s architecture by avoiding the tedious development effort of writing a separate set of instrumentation functions just to get configuration data to work with SNMP data. The ConfD SNMP Agent is fully featured and supports SNMP v1, v2c, and v3, including v3’s various security features. Allowing a seamless integration between SNMP and the other management interfaces Tail-f also provides atomized mapping tools between MIB and XML-defined data.

“The capabilities in ConfD 2.0 and the new SNMP Agent will help our customers deliver powerful network management software designed to meet the requirements of large network operators,” said Håkan Millroth, CEO, Tail-f Systems. “Network equipment suppliers can now implement all the operational and management features in one coherent framework, with one database, and one set of instrumentation code. Stovepipe architectures can be finally laid to rest.”

The ConfD 2.0 release includes multiple new and improved features. A new API for the ConfD CDB (Configuration Database) enables operational and configuration data to be stored in a single database. ConfD NETCONF now includes a gateway function providing a southbound client interface that enables ConfD to aggregate multiple NETCONF devices into a single configuration. This capability allows CLI, Web, and NETCONF interfaces access to any sub-agent connected locally or remotely through the ConfD gateway.

All ConfD 2.0 features, including the SNMP Agent, are available for demonstration and evaluation upon customer request.
