Tail-f Systems Turbo Charges ConfD with Multicore Support, In-service Upgradeability, and TailPacks for Faster Development

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – March 30, 2010 – Tail-f Systems, the leading developer of on-device configuration management software for networking equipment providers, today announced powerful new capabilities for its ConfD software. These new features will help developers build applications that run faster, reduce development time, and further extend carrier-grade capabilities to their products.

“We selected ConfD because it was best in its class and we are pleased to see Tail-f Systems continuously improving the product with these exciting new capabilities,” said Phil Levy, P. Eng., Manager, Software Engineering, RuggedCom Inc.

The size and complexity of modern networks and management protocols like NETCONF often require ConfD to perform multiple operations in parallel. Support for Multicore allows ConfD to use multiple cores or CPUs to distribute processing and maximize performance.

Tail-f Systems’ TailPacks are libraries of software that help developers get applications up and running faster. TailPacks reduce development and testing time, minimize project risk, and decrease the time developers spend integrating third party components. TailPacks include source code, documentation, test examples, and a liberal usage license. As part of the program, developers will be encouraged to contribute patches and enhancements to TailPacks.

Continuous availability is a critical requirement for carrier-grade networking equipment and ConfD already includes many capabilities that enable developers to build highly resilient systems. With this announcement, ConfD supports in-service upgrades, allowing changes to the data model to be made without restarting the ConfD application.

“Our customers operate in dynamic and highly competitive markets,” said Håkan Millroth, CEO, Tail-f Systems. “With these new capabilities, ConfD customers can develop more powerful configuration management systems and bring them to market faster.”

Support for Multicore and in-service data model upgrades will be available in ConfD 3.2 this April. The first of many TailPacks, the Linux Control TailPack is also available in April. Tail-f Systems will release subsequent TailPacks throughout the year to address integration with other popular operating systems, middleware, and protocols.
